excerpt from
Harold
Chapman
:
To
make it short--
Grandpa
Switz
was
SOOOOOOooooooo ill after coming out of the Andersonville Prison Pen
(where
over 12,000, including my mother's dad's mother's brother) at the
end
of the Civil War, that he was disabled and could not word but very
little.
His eyes were so bad that he had to stay in a darkened room alot.
There
was NO food stamps
NOR
welfare in those days, and to support his
family
John
just kinda followed his
Jackson
brothers-in-law around, as
they
moved from place to place.

excerpt from
Harold
Chapman
:
Now, many many years later, it came to pass that my late (died
1995)
sister, Daisy Anne (Chapman) Vanarsdall (and husband/family) lived
at
Grand Island
,
Nebraska
. Central City was not far away, and she located
John
Franklin
Switzer
's grave. His government
issued Civil War gravestone
was
falling over every time the lawnmower came by. My folks sent my
sister
the money to have the gravestone reset. And after it was reset,
sis
sent us pictures of her daughter,
Martha
, standing beside the newly
reset
marker.
And that "is not all"-- the cemetery people were not very thrilled
that
a descendant of
John
Switzer
"showed up." The city was about to take
title
to the UNused lots in the Switzer plot. When
John
Franklin
Switzer
died,
Elizabeth
Emma
bought lots for EVERYONE in the family. But of
course,
the family returned to
Missouri
, and the other lots were never
used.
My sister had us sent her information and proof that she was a
descendant
of
John
Franklin
Switzer
to keep the city from taking title to
the
lots. But in time sis and family moved to
Oklahoma
, so it did not
matter.
I assume that long ago by now, after no descendant of
John
Franklin
visited the cemetery for whatever
period of time is required
under
the city ordinance, the city has finally taken title to the unused
lots.

JACOB
C.1
SWEITZER
was born December 08, 1788 in York County, Pennsylvania, and died March 25, 1859
in Fairfield Twp., Columbiana Co., Ohio. He
married CATHARINE
MUMMERT.
Notes for JACOB
C. SWEITZER:
In early census
records, the name of Sweitzer has been spelled as Switzer.
It isn't until later generations that the "e" shows up.
Either it was originally spelled without the "e", or it was
transcribed incorrectly.
There are two (2) Jacob
Switzer's listed in the 1820 Columbiana Co. census records - one in Salem Twp.
pg. 0065, and one in Centre Twp., pg. 0083.
At this time I haven't been able to determine which county is the correct
one.

Records for Columbiana Co., Ohio lists Jacob and Catherine living in Fairfield
Twp. Anna (29), Sophia (18), and
Lydia A. (16) also living in household.
Source: Marlboro Twp.,
Heritage Handbook 2003 has the following information on the Centerbrook Farm
(presented to the Marlboro Twp. Historical Society on Feb. 19, 2002 by Clifford
D. Sweitzer). Jacob Sweitzer and
wife Catharine drove a two-horse wagon from York County, Pennsylvania, to
Columbiana County, Ohio in the fall of 1825.
Thy brought all their possessions and 7 children in this wagon.
Later 5 more children were born. The
children coming from PA were: Margaret, Mary, Isaac, Samuel, Susan, Tobias,
Levi. The children born in Ohio
were: Eliza, Ann, Benjamin, Sophia, and Lydia Ann.
There is a little discrepancy in some of the names of the children at
this point.

Sweitzer purchased original 80 acres of what is now known as Centerbrook Farm on
August 3, 1852 (date reported incorrectly in article).
"Sweitzer" is the name given a style of barn that was developed
in Pennsylvania. The local "Sweitzer"
barns show how well they are designed for livestock.
They are banked and over hang an open side.
There is still some evidence, on the north end of the Sweitzer farm, of
the location of the Lehr home. This
was one of the earliest homes of the township, the site having been chosen
because of a spring.

Samuel Miller Swisher b. May 23rd or 24th (or as the obit stated) May
28th, 1821 Cumberland County, Pa. d. 28 July, 1907 at age 86 yrs. 2 mo's.
He was the seventh child of John Swisher b. 1782and Mary
Magdalina Henry Swisher. It is thought that John Swisher
came from Cumberland near Carlisle and Mechanicsburg Pa. which are mentioned in
some of the obits.
When Samuel was four years old his family moved from Pa to take up a 280 Acre
farm in a newly opened section that was to become Crawford County, Ohio. This
was in 1826. John and Mary returned to Pa around 1835.
Samuel m. Elizabeth Knapp Minnerly on New Years Eve 1841. Elizabeth had
come to Crawford Co. with her parents from New York about 1837. In 1843
they joined the United Brethren Church when the preacher held meetings at the
Swisher school house. He became a trustee and eventually the church bought
a plot of land from the John Swisher estate for a church and cemetery.
Samuel apprenticed himself to a blacksmith in Osceola, Ohio and persued that
trade for several years. Samuel also served as county commissioner for a few
years, a school director and Sunday school teacher in Osceola. He also was
Justice of the peace for eight years.
When the railroad opened up in the western states, Samuel and Elizabeth
and their five children went west to Illinois to a farm near LaMoille in Bureau
county. He was a share cropper for six years until he'd saved enough money
and bought 200 Acres near Mendota Il. Mendota was a new village
established when the Illinois Central Railroad and the Burlington Railroad
crossed at this point. Once the RR's opened up the farmers
were able to transport grain. Samuel brought his family to the open
prairie lands near Chicago to take advantage of this. The Burlington and
Quincy RR had just been laid out across Illinois. He also brought the
skills needed to start a new farm and new community: Farmer and blacksmith,
cabinet maker and wheelwright, yes, and auctioneer and lay preacher!
Children of Samuel and Elizabeth
Eliza Jane Swisher b. 8 Oct. 1845 m. Traylor
Eliza lived to be 22 and died shortly after giving birth to twins Clara and
Ella.
