Lewis Switzer (Schweitzer/Sweitzer) of Clarion Co. Pa.
Searching for Lewis Switzer's Pre Clarion Co. (1804) place of residence and other family members. Lewis Switzer (name spelling previously Sweitzer and Schweitzer) arrived in Clarion Co about 1804 and we have no clue as to where he may have come from. We have found connections to our family with the Colwell's and Barlett's, both from Berks Co but have not proven a connection to Berks County to date. Anyone who might have a Lewis/ Ludwig/Laurence in their family b. 1750 ca please contact us. We do have a family oral history similar to that of the Peter Schweitzer who married Elizabeth Heffelfinger in Berks Co and family rumors say that we were in Lancaster, Philadelphia, German town area early on and we suspect the possibility of Maryland around 1800. Current research is being done on a Lewis Switzer (Ludwig) in Maryland that could be this Lewis in Clarion. We found and have sent for copies of the Shriver papers where there is an insolvency case concerning one Ludwig/Luther/Lewis Switzer in Md 1801-1802. This is the same Ludwig Switzer married to Maudlin Yingling. The Yinglings, Sloughenhoupts, and others from that area make their way to Clarion Co. Pa.

We are researching this family line to see if Mary is a sister to our Peter and Lewis Jr. This Whitmer family came in from Franklin Co. traveling with a Christian Over who married Joseph's sister Nancy Whitmer. Levi Switzer was born 17 May, 1832 Clarion Co. Pa d. 14 May, 1903 Licking Twp, Clarion Co. Pa. He married Mary b. 10 April, 1846 d. 30 June, 1918 Clarion Co. Pa Levi and Mary are buried in the West Freedom Cemetery Clarion Co. Pa. There appears to be a family plot including the following stones: J. H. b.14 April, 1883 d. 19 Oct, 1883, W. H. b. 30 Jan, 1878 d 1 Feb, 1878, Horace W. Died Sept 1877 age 5 yrs and L. Switzer. Census show Levi and Mary to have a son Addison b. 1860c. and there is a tombstone with A.E. Switzer b. 24 Jan, 1860 d.July 1882 in their family plot. 1860 census shows Mary's age as 20 which means she would have been born 1840 not 1846 as the tombstone reads. Court records were found where Levi took Lewis Switzer to court and sued him for land. The relationship is still not known. We guess this is a son born later in life or a grandson to Lewis Jr. Clarion Democrat March19, 1903 - Mr. Levi Switzer, a well known and greatly respected citizen of Easton, Licking Twp - found dead in his barn last Saturday morning, March 14, 1903, about 72 years old. Leaves a wife and two daughters. He enlisted Oct 9, 1862 in Co. F, 67th regiment Pa Vol. He was a celebrated Fifer and was promoted to principal musician on May 1, 1865. Barlett connectionsWe have just discovered a Barlett Switzer connection as of recently and are currently trying to make connections with our Switzer clan to that of the Barletts of Berks Co. A Peter Barlett married 2nd a Christina Switzer b. 1780c. and we are looking for information on her. Peter's son Lewis Barlett married 1st a Catherine (possilby middle name of Caroline) Switzer b. 1816c. from Clarion Pa. This is more than likely a granddaugter of Lewis as Peter Barlett is found living between his son's Peter and Lewis Switzer on the 1810 Armstrong Co. census (Clarion area before being made a county).
