Research submitted by Deborah Walsh:

Johannes "John" Schweitzer b. 1729 - 1730 Berne Switzerland
d. April 12, 1802 Spring Hill Farm Augusta Co. Va.
m. in 1750 to Anna Warner b. Phil. Pa

John came to America aboard the ship Patience commanded by Hugh Steel.  He took an oath on Sept 17, 1753 and his age was listed as 24.  The ship came from Rotterdam and Cowes and landed in Phil. Pa.

Information from a Gerald Swisher says that this John arrived on the ship Fane in 1749 with his brothers Valentine and Nicholas.  I did not find his name mentioned on that ship list.  Is it possible there are two Johannes Johns?

John became an Indian Trader and merchant and made trips into the interior of Pa collecting valuable furs. (The oldest receipt found of John's trading is dated at Phil. Pa on July 24, 1767)  After his marriage to Anna in Philadelphia  they moved to McGaheysville, Rockingham Co, Va.  Later he moved to Augusta Co, Va where he d. in 1802 and is buried on what is known as Spring Hill Farm.  He is thought to have three brothers also living in America, but this is unproven.

On p. 532 of " Chronicles of the Scotch- Irish Settlement in VA" April 16, 1802 - John Swisher's noncupative will - not established: To children, two daughters, sons.  Made 11 April 1802 day before his death.  John Pence and Jacob Spots and testator's son John to be executors.  Test: Mathew Hunter, Catherine Hunter. To four eldest sons, among them, John and Jacob. He had two daughters and six sons

MERCURY (1851)The U.S. ship MERCURY was built at New York by Jacob A. Westervelt & William Mackey for Boyd & Hincken's Second Line of sailing packets between New York and Havre, and was launched on 3 September 1851. 1,350/1,156 tons (old/new measurement); 193.6 x 38.10 x 22.2 feet (length x beam x depth of hold); 2 decks, draught 21 feet. The MERCURY was the largest vessel in the Havre Second Line, and the fastest (she is often considered a "medium clipper"): in the 18 years (1851-1869) in which she sailed in the line, her westbound passages, from Havre to New York, averaged 33 days, her fastest passage being 23 days, her longest being 49 days. I have no information on her history after 1869 or her ultimate fate.
